This is a classic 7 mile hike through the best of Rocky Mountain National Park. The route goes by some of the prettiest waterfalls to one of the most scenic lakes in the Park.
Starting from the Wild Basin Ranger Station you cross Hunter and Sandbeach Creeks on wooden bridges then soon want to stop at the beautiful Copeland Falls. A little farther along through the aspen and ferns and you'll reach the North Saint Vrain Bridge where the climbing begins. It's pretty much gentle climbing through the trees from here to Calypso Cascades. The trail levels a bit through the old burn to Ouzel Falls then swings around the corner and descends to another bridge at the North Saint Vrain Campground. The trail then rises on the shoulder of Mount Orton, passes the turn-off to Lions Lake and opens a little with glimpses of peaks and waterfalls in the distance. When you hit the Thunder Lake Campground Junction, just drop down to the left a few hundred feet to the ranger's cabin and your well earned rest.
Driving Directions
The hike begins at Wild Basin Trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park. To get here, drive northwest on US 36 to Estes Park and turn left onto Highway 7 (Peak-to-Peak). Drive south to the Wild Basin Junction. Turn right (west) and drive as far as possible to the trailhead. In the winter this road may be closed as far down as Copeland Lake and makes a great ski trip.
Permits and Fees
